Why are my tires suffering stubble damage? How can I correct it?
There are two types of stubble damage: stubble piercing and stubble wear. Stubble piercing occurs when pieces of corn stalk, bean stalk, cotton stalk, etc. penetrate through the tire and flatten it. Stubble wear occurs when pieces of stalk wear through the tread and expose the cords in the tire body. There is a solution. For over 20 years, sunflower farmers in North Dakota have benefited from a device used to prevent stubble damage. A 2" well pipe is suspended ahead of the front tires from a frame with heavy chain links. This allows the pipe to move without hitting the tires. Stubble conditions vary depending on the crop, so the size of the pipe will vary also. For example, use larger, heavier pipe for bean stubble. Fill a larger pipe with sand for corn stubble.
